The Sound of Sirens

From The Past: December 6, 2008

As we headed for Lexington this afternoon it was snowing and slick. We traveled Winchester Road at an unhurried pace behind several other slow-moving cars. I don’t think anyone wanted to rush.

Once we were almost to the turn off for Man-O-War Boulevard, this is the sight we saw:

It just reinforced that we were doing the right thing by taking our time. I don’t believe there was a time we were outside that we didn’t hear sirens coming from somewhere.

Coming home, we encountered a truck which had flipped over and was being towed from the side of the road. Behind that truck was a minivan on a tow truck. Across the county line, a salt truck had gone off the side of the road and was in the process of being pulled back on the roadway. We waited in a line of cars to get around this new obstacle, but were once again glad we were taking things slow and safe.

It seems as though the road crews in both Fayette and Clark counties were caught off their guard by this bit of bad weather. I am sure they will have salt trucks out earlier the next time it is supposed to snow, even if there is only a little predicted.

The salt can only do so much though. People need to take their time and not get in such a hurry.
