November Movies 2008

From The Past: December 1, 2008

11-1-08 Clear and Present Danger – Harrison Ford plays a CIA agent who is tricked into thinking no troops will be used to fight a secret war against the Columbian drug cartel. This was a good movie with both action and adventure.

11-3-08 Fled – Two inmates escape from a prison chain gang when a brawl erupts. This movie was interesting and had a twist.

11-4-08 Wuthering Heights – (The 1939 version) I thought this film was a very good depiction of the book by the same name and written by Emily Brontë. The only major difference was the actors and actresses should have had British accents.

11-4-08 War of the Worlds – We first saw this movie in the theatre, the summer of 2005. I enjoyed it once again tonight very much. It stars Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning and is rated PG-13. There is minimal cussing and no nudity. I believe it received this rating for some intense scenes.

11-5-08 An Affair to Remember – Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this movie from 1957. It is about two people falling in love while on a cruise and planning to meet again six months later. The movie was clean and sweet, but very slow. This movie could be viewed by any audience.

11-6-08 Raising Victor Vargas – This movie wasn’t much of a movie at all. It was less than an hour and a half. It is about a teenager who lives with his grandmother, brother and sister. There are no well-known actors or actresses.

11-7-08 Crimson Tide – Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman star in this 1995 film about a United States missile submarine and Hackman’s role as a captain who doesn’t like to wait for clear orders. It is rated ‘R’ for strong language.

11-22-08 Unfaithful – This is a steamy movie about a housewife who has an affair on her successful husband.

11-28-08 Sling Blade – This movie was very interesting, but also very unexpected. Billy Bob Thornton plays a man who, after many years, is released from a mental hospital. He soon befriends a boy and his mother. The biggest surprise in this movie was there was no blood at all, which, for some reason, I fully expected. Also, the acting ability of John Ritter as a gay man was exceptional. I was also surprised when I found that Dwight Yoakam played one of the lead roles. I never recognized him, but this movie was filmed at some odd angles so it was rare that you saw someone’s face straight-on. The language and descriptions were harsh, so if you rent it, be prepared for that.

11-29-08 Twilight – After reading a book, it is a mistake to go into a movie thinking every piece of the story will be there. As much as we, the fans, would like to leave every part of the book intact, they cannot possibly fit it all in a two-hour movie. That said I was impressed with this film. I thought the actors and actresses understood the essence of the characters they played and I thought they did a great job. Peter Facinelli who played the role of Dr. Carlisle Cullen reminded me so much of Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire not only in looks, but also with the way he spoke. Also, during the movie, Cam Gigandet who plays James, reminded me of Brad Pitt. I don’t know how he looks on a day to day basis, but in this movie he looked like Brad Pitt to me.

Ashley, on the other hand, did not like this portrayal at all. When comparing it to the book she said, “They skipped a lot and added a lot of junk.” She said it was “pretty good” if you do not compare it to the book.

Feel free to share your thoughts on any of these movies 🙂
