Is It Lost?

From The Past: August 13, 2008

In the past week I have seen this same Heron several times. It is always standing in the same spot. It’s not stuck because I have witnessed it lifting its legs up out of the water. Also, it has only been in this spot every other day, which means it is going somewhere else and then returning.

If Herons were common around here, I wouldn’t have looked twice.

They stand still in the water and wait for fish or frogs to come up around them, then they grab them with their long beaks. They are the bane of many an ornamental goldfish pond owner as they just love to pick off the koi and goldfish one by one. People resort to putting mesh over the water to protect the fish!
