From The Past: October 27, 2006
There are foods we only eat at certain times during the year. For instance, I typically only make potato salad and macaroni salad during the spring and summer months. I only buy popsicles and cold treats when it’s hot outside.
The grill is used during the winter, but not as frequently as during the summer months. After an entire summer of cheeseburgers once a week, I don’t want those.
Fall and winter are times for special things like, vegetable soup, brown beans and cornbread, chili, and turkey or beef hash. When we’re feeling snacky, I bake a cookie sheet full of sausage balls in the oven. A plate like the one below doesn’t last long:
Towards Thanksgiving, we will make homemade Chex Mix, Christmas Fudge, Seasoned Oyster Crackers, Baked Cinnamon Pecans, and much more.
I don’t know why I don’t fix these things during the summer. I could, but I guess food is one more thing that adds to the holidays. It makes it special. Sausage balls during a summer picnic would be weird for me and I don’t know that I would enjoy them near as much. Does anyone else feel this way?
