From The Past: May 23, 2006
Yesterday I cleaned out the filing cabinet where we keep old receipts. It’s only a small cabinet with two drawers, but it tends to get messy and crammed full of papers that do us no good.
I will admit that keeping bills for a period helps in some situations. For example, doctor’s receipts come in very handy at the end of the year when they are balancing their books and want to convince you that you still owe money.
We still have our tax statements from when we were first married. For the most part though, I think after the bill is paid and a lot of time has passed, you can safely shred the receipts.
Below is the pile of receipts we did not need:
It doesn’t look too bad in that picture, but it is. It took Ashley and me an hour to shred it all. It was fun for her at first, but after a while, she was bored and quit.
I filled two garbage bags full of junky papers that were taking up valuable space in my filing cabinet.
