I had noticed a few fleas on Guido here and there. I really had to be looking for them, but they seemed to be rare thank the Lord!
After buying some cheap flea medicine from Wal-Mart which did nothing, a well-meaning person suggested I use Avon’s Skin-So-Soft to bathe Guido in. She said the fleas would come right to the surface because the oils in this product wouldn’t allow them any air. I thought this was a fabulous idea!
Last night Kevin gave Guido a bath. First, he used flea shampoo and rinsed him off. Then, together, we used the Skin-So-Soft. It was very oily, but I rubbed it in well on his back and especially his legs. We left it on for a minute, but never saw one flea. We rinsed him off again with water, took him out of the tub and towel dried him off as usual.
Well, I have to tell you that he was like a greased pig! When I rubbed my hand over his back to pet him, my hand came away looking like I had soaked it in baby oil! My hand was shiny and had little hairs all over it. I told Kevin we HAD to give him another bath in regular dog shampoo and get that oil out of his hair!
We did just that, but it didn’t help. Oh, maybe it helped a tiny, tiny bit, but not as much as I would have liked. He smells wonderful; you just can’t touch him without having to wash up afterwards. Never again!!!
This whole episode reminded Kevin of years ago when someone (the same well-meaning person) told me that mayonnaise and raw eggs was supposed to make your hair shiny. Against Kevin’s better judgment, I convinced him to put tons of mayonnaise and a few raw eggs in my hair. I let it sit for a while and then attempted to rinse it out.
The joke was on me! That stuff wasn’t going anywhere! It took Kevin over an hour to get it all out and even after that, I was picking egg out of my hair! Once again, I say never again!!!
Maybe we aren’t following directions. Maybe Guido’s hair is just different from their dogs’ hair and he can’t have products that are that oily.
We did buy some flea medicine from our vet and are using it once a month. We just thought we would speed up the process and try this too. Take some advice from me: don’t try this at home!
