From The Past: May 7, 2004
Since the weather was so beautiful yesterday afternoon, I asked Ashley if she wanted to go out front and ride her bike. She said yes, so I got a lawn chair and set it up under our Weeping Willow tree, put our cat Church on his leash, and grabbed my book. It was beautiful under the willow tree; just warm enough to be comfortable. The only thing that grabbed my attention after a few minutes was the incessant chirp of a Robin. I kept thinking how brave she was that she was so close to the cat and me. She wasn’t singing though; it was a definite chirp. She flew from branch to branch and then when I thought she was going to fly away; she would fly down to the grass or the sidewalk right in front of me.
After riding her bike up and down the sidewalk for a while, Ashley walked over to the tree and looked up. “Look! There’s a bird’s nest!” she said. I looked up and right above my head (I couldn’t have been any more exact) was this bird’s nest. It dawned on me then why this Robin was acting so troubled: this was her nest and I bet it had babies in it.
At last I opened my book and was just reading the words of Hercule Poirot when I felt IT hit my arm, back, and hair. That mamma Robin was so mad and so afraid that I was infringing on her territory that she dropped a load on me. There is no eloquent way of saying it. I was mortified to say the least! I had Ashley go and get her daddy so that he could help me. She doesn’t know it, but I could hear her laughter from inside the house. She thought that it was the funniest thing ever! The only thing Kevin had to say was, “That’s what you get for sitting under a TREE.” Thanks, Hun!
