Christmas Ornaments

I can hardly believe that Christmas Day is only twenty days from today. We always open gifts on Christmas Eve, so that actually gives us only nineteen days to go. Each year in September, I think about how Halloween can’t get here fast enough. Once October arrives, I am still excited for Halloween, but I am already looking forward to Christmas. One might think with this thought process that I wouldn’t enjoy the holiday at hand, but I really do; I simply love Christmas.

I always had a fascination with my Grandmother Scott’s Christmas ornaments. I knew from a young age that one day, I would be the one who inherited them. It reminds me of how Andrew knows right now that he will inherit our Fiestaware plates. He has a special place in his heart for the plates, like I have for the ornaments.

I can get lost for hours looking though pictures of vintage Christmas decorations on Pinterest. I adore the tinsel trees and garlands, along with the Christopher Radko style ornaments. Years ago, when I first saw the red bells hanging from the ceiling in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis, I knew I had to find some for our own home. You can see one in the picture below:

I have learned that you can find almost anything on Amazon:

It’s amazing how well vintage ornaments are replicated these days. You can go to Target right now and they have a section of “vintage” ornaments. Once I add a few of them to my tree with actual vintage ornaments, you can’t tell the difference.

When Kevin and I first got married, we had no ornaments and no money to spend on ornaments. Mom and dad bought us five boxes of colored balls in red, blue, green, silver and gold. I still have most of them. We bought a box of candy canes to hang on the tree because they are very inexpensive and you typically get 12 per box. One year, the kids made ornaments from Play Doh and another year they made more ornaments using applesauce and cinnamon. I would buy a few new ornaments each year. I can recall mom and I going in a flea market and finding a box of about ten vintage ornaments in an old beat-up box. I was beyond thrilled. Some kids hate helping decorate the Christmas tree, but I always loved helping mom.

You might think after all these years I would have stopped buying ornaments. I thought that too. But, I haven’t. If anything, my obsession has gotten worse. I do try to give a few away every year though. I have some on the tree that were bought just because we couldn’t afford anything else at the time so they have no meaning to them. These are the ones that I hang on the back side of the tree.

Do you have a favorite Christmas ornament? I would love to hear about it if you do!
