Book Talk

Currently: I have started reading my first Sue Grafton book titled, ‘A’ is for Alibi. https://amzn.to/2USs8Gs

These books are apparently known as the Alphabet Mysteries. There is a female private investigator working on solving a murder that happened years ago. It is very interesting so far. We watched every episode of CSI when it was on TV and this book reminds me of CSI, only in book form.

The author, Sue Grafton was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky which is about 2 ½ hours away from us. Sadly, she passed away in December of 2017. She had published books up to the letter ‘Y’, so unless her family finds a manuscript for another book, there won’t be a ‘Z’.

More Books

The kids first day of spring break started on Friday and they don’t have to go back until April first. They would have been out for two whole weeks if they didn’t have to make up all of those snow days.

When I picked Ashley up from school on Thursday she was aggravated. She said, “I don’t have a book. The teacher took it away because she didn’t want us to lose them over the break.” So, what did we have to do on Friday? We took a trip to the public library! We checked out three movies: Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Then I checked out one of each Eloise book. Apparently, Eloise has been around for quite a while, but we have never gotten to know her. I am hoping that Ashley will fall in love with other book characters like she has Junie B. Jones. We shall see. As for me, I am still reading Blackwood Farm. It is a wonderful book that just keeps getting better and better. With the kids being off, it will be difficult to find some quiet time, but I am hoping to finish it soon!

Saturday, we visited The Book Cellar. For those of you who don’t know about The Book Cellar, let me tell you about it. It is in the basement of the main public library branch on Main Street in Lexington. All of the movies, CD’s, magazines, books, and records that people donate to the library are for sale at The Book Cellar. Cheap. That is the only way to describe this place. Everything is dirt cheap. Used book stores cannot compare with their prices. Used book stores normally ask half the price that the book was originally priced for. Say the book was $14 when it was new, well at a used book store, you will normally pay $7. Not at The Book Cellar! You can probably get that same $7 book for $1. This is why I walked out of there with thirteen Agatha Christie books! They are in perfect condition, have the old covers that I love, and most of them were only 50 cents each! You just can’t beat that! Kevin and Andrew also found a ton of books to fill their days. I bought Ashley a heap of Highlights and Sesame Street Magazines – never written in! Wow! And they were only 25 cents each

  1. Tami, thanks for the suggestion. I have been looking for a good book to start reading. I love that it was written by a Kentucky author! I was born and raised in Ky., and live now in NJ. One of the many reasons why I enjoy your videos is that it reminds me of home. ❤ Have a wonderful day and thank you for always brightening my day!

  2. Our library is the same-10 cents for magazines…25 cents for regular paperbacks…50 cents for trade paperbacks…$1 for most hardcovers…and $2 for the over-sized photo books(like the book of London I sent you.) I just bought a $50 book on Civil War battlefields where the photo’s are breath-taking. Sunset with blazing orange or Sunrise with red and orange…beautiful clouds…time-lapse night photos with the stars above..and it was only $2. My Mom is a big Clive Cussler fan. He used to just write the Dirk Pitt books but now writes 5 different series and each series has a new book each year-5 books a year from him. She could never afford to get them all new-even Half-Price books would be too much. But I’ve found all of them for the past couple years at the library. In 3 years I’ve bought about $375 worth of books for $15. I read that about Sue Grafton-I’ve read all her books up to “Q is For Quarry”. I really like Kinsey-the main character/private investigator. I think I will finish the rest. She died before even writing “Z is for Zero” so the series ends with Y because her daughter woin’t allow a ghost writer according to her Mom’s wishes.
