You may not consider furniture an interesting subject, but it can be. When Kevin and I first got married, his parents gave us an assortment of furniture. They decided that they wanted new furniture in their home, so our marriage gave them the perfect excuse. They gave us end tables and a matching coffee table for the living room and a kitchen table with chairs and hutch. Kevin had a couch, a small end table his childhood bed (full size) and dresser that he brought to the marriage.
My aunt gave us end tables for the bedroom and I had a small chest of drawers. My parents gave us smaller, but still very useful items like pots and pans, towels and washcloths.
Together, we bought some very inexpensive pressed wood furniture from Walmart like a desk, entertainment center and bookshelf. Throughout the years, we have bought several more desks and bookshelves from Walmart. They may not have been the prettiest to look at, but they served their purpose and lasted many years until we passed them on to someone else.
After moving from our apartment, we bought a couch and an armoire for the living room to replace the open entertainment center. I wanted something with doors so that I could hide the TV and movies when we had company. It was a very nice piece of furniture. If I remember correctly, we sold it when we bought a TV that was too big to fit inside. At that point, we bought a TV stand from Target which we still have today. The hundreds of VHS tapes are long gone and I have a minimal amount of DVD’s to store, so it is perfect. We also bought an armoire for Ashley’s room from Big Lots. It’s a very nice, large piece of furniture which we still have today. We gave Kevin’s childhood bed to Andrew because my parents bought us a new bed (the one we have now).
I walked through the house to see how many pieces we still have that were given to us all those years ago. We have two; the two end tables that were given to us from Kevin’s parents. Everything else was given away to other family who needed it or sold.
I have also been curious about how much furniture Kevin and I own today that we bought for ourselves. You would think in this big house that we bought a lot, but we really haven’t. We bought the hall tree in the living room, the TV stand in the den and a small table for a lamp. In the dining room, you will find our most expensive purchase, our dining room table and ten chairs. In the kitchen, we also bought that table which was our second most expensive purchase. In our bedroom, the only thing that we bought was a chest of drawers. We bought it for Ashley, but she never used it once we moved, so we bought it from her. Upstairs, there is a desk and the aforementioned armoire that we bought for Ashley and that is it. Everything else has been given to us. We have been very blessed in that way.
I think our next furniture purchase will be a couch in the den, but we plan to wait a while. Guido sheds hair like all Pugs do and Chapel likes to dig in his claws when he jumps up on the back, like most Tabby cats.
I love the picture.
